Groundfridge compared to the traditional root cellar

The classic cellar versus the Groundfridge: What are the pros and cons of both options? We compare the traditional, brick-built cellar with our prefabricated space in terms of construction, installation time, and cost.

Groundfridge in vergelijking tot de klassieke kelder

For centuries, the underground cellar was one of the standards for food preservation. However, most homes lack this space, while the need for natural, energy-neutral storage for garden harvests or keeping various preserved foods dry and dark remains undiminished.

As developers of the Groundfridge, we thought it would be useful to make a brief comparison between our Groundfridge and a classic cellar.

1. Construction and Capacity

  • Classic Cellar: Built on-site from concrete, brick, or natural stone. The great advantage is the design freedom and maximum storage capacity, ideal for very large volumes. However, manual waterproofing is complex; errors in barriers quickly lead to moisture problems.

  • Groundfridge: An industrially designed, prefabricated cellar made of reinforced polyester. Due to its convex shape and material, the construction is guaranteed 100% waterproof and virtually impervious to tree roots or groundwater. The smooth interior is also easy to keep hygienically clean.

2. Installation

  • Classic Cellar: Construction is an extensive project that takes weeks to months due to deep excavation, foundation work, and drying times. A building permit is often required.

  • Groundfridge: The impact on your garden is minimal. The Groundfridge is placed in an excavated pit and covered with the excavated soil, which immediately acts as an insulation layer. The physical placement by a landscaper or construction company generally takes only 1 to 2 days.

3. Cost Control

  • Classic Cellar: Customization, structural calculations, and specialized man-hours quickly and unexpectedly increase the total investment.

  • Groundfridge: Has a clear, transparent initial purchase price. Since no specialist contractors are needed and installation time is short, total project costs are always lower.

Comparison Overview

Feature Classic Cellar The Groundfridge
Optimal Application Extremely large volumes & custom work Gardens, estates, or communal vegetable gardens
Installation Time Weeks to months 1 to 2 days (physical placement)
Waterproofness Complex manual work (risk of leakage) Factory 100% waterproof
Ventilation Manual architectural design Integrated, solar-powered, and personally adjustable

Conclusion

The classic cellar remains a wonderful solution when exceptionally large storage capacity or specific design is required. For regular household use, storing an average garden harvest, or preserving canned foods, the Groundfridge offers a more efficient, quicker to realize, and more cost-transparent alternative.
